Diane Harris Porter

DianePorter2.webDiane Harris Porter, age 79, of Oak City, Millard County, Utah, passed away on April 30, 2015 in Oak City, after a valiant year-long battle with leukemia. Diane was born and raised in the loving home of Earl Tolton and Silva Ann Lovell Harris, on April 17, 1936.

Diane had the unique honor to be born in, live in and pass away in her beloved Oak City home, originally built and lived in by Frederic Rich Lyman. She was raised in Oak City and moved away after her marriage. Subsequently, she lived in Walla Walla and Olympia, WA; Portland, OR; Omaha, NE; Winston-Salem, NC; Boise, ID; and then finally, the family home in Oak City in 1980.

She attended grade school in Oak City, high school in Delta, Utah, and graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1958, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Instruction. In 1957 and again in 1958, she was the recipient of Academic High Honors.

Shortly after her BYU graduation, she married Elzo Eugene Porter on July 23, 1958 in the Manti LDS Temple and she was immediately blessed with 3 children from his previous marriage - Bruce, Barbara, and Marion. Diane and Elzo were then later blessed with 2 additional daughters, Jeananne and Jenny. Diane and Elzo served an LDS Church Mission to the Boston, Massachusetts area from June 1990 until June 1991. While there, they met and unofficially adopted Kathleen Alldredge into their family. Diane and Elzo enjoyed over 49 years of marriage before he passed away on June 21, 2007. In August 2008, Diane adopted her little Dachshund puppy, Lilli, into her family. Lilli was her beloved companion ever since.

Diane was a homemaker and mother to 6 children. After moving back to Utah, Diane was a teacher, librarian and reading specialist at Delta North Elementary in Delta, Utah, from 1981 until 1998. In May 1990, she was honored as the 1989-1990 school year Educator of the Year. Diane taught piano to many children in the Oak City area. Her students always had excellent performances in music competitions. She taught piano for over 45 years and was actively engaged as a piano teacher until a few weeks before her death. Teaching piano was one of her passions and she adored her students.

Diane had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and lived her LDS faith which showed through in her loving encounters with others. Her face would light up when she talked with family and friends. She was a quiet person who could draw out people in an instant and they walked away knowing that she genuinely cared about them and their lives. Diane was a faithful servant of Heavenly Father throughout her life.

Diane is survived by her children: Elzo Bruce (Ruth) Porter, Salt Lake City, UT; Barbara Jo (Dan) Convery, Spanish Fork, UT; Marion Alma (Karen) Porter, Boise, ID; Jeananne Lybbert, Orem, UT; Jenny Marie (Kevin) Hoskins, Colorado Springs, CO; Kathleen Alldredge, Chatham, MA; sister-in-law: Ileen Harris, Provo, UT; brother-in-law: Laurel (Lora Lee) Porter, St. George, UT; 22 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Diane was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters: Shirley Harris DeLapp, Gene Harris Kennedy, Marion Harris; brothers: Grant John Harris, Keith Dwayne Harris, Don Tolton Harris; grandson: Kevin Jay Hoskins, Jr.

Diane’s family extends special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Central Utah Clinic and Delta Community Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local school library.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 8, at 11:00 AM, at the Oak City LDS Chapel. Viewings will be held at the Oak City Church Thursday evening, 6-8 PM; and again on Friday, 9:30-10:40 AM, prior to the service. Interment will be at the Oak City Cemetery.
