Merilyn Starley Bishop

MerilynBishop2.webMerilyn Starley Bishop, age 91, passed away December 6, 2015 in St. George Utah. Melly was born on January 12, 1924 in Delta, Utah to William J. and Ava Stevens Starley. She married her high school sweetheart, Wilburne H. “Bill” Bishop, on March 8, 1942. The marriage was later solemnized in the LDS Temple. Bill passed away in 1988. Mom married James Earl “Jim” George and lived in Cedar City and the Salt Lake areas.

Bill and Merilyn ran the D. Stevens Department Store in Delta for many years as well as Stevens LTD in Page, Arizona. Bill and Mel helped the family carry on the tradition of quality stores. They were both active in the schools, Booster clubs and in serving the Delta community.

In 1974, Bill and Mel took a leap of faith and opened another D Stevens store in Page, Arizona. Page was a new city serving the Glen Canyon recreation area. They ran the business together where Melly served as the buyer. They retired and returned to Delta in 1984.

Merilyn loved her family. She attended many events of all kinds but loved football. She attended games with her daughter Beverly up to the age of 90. Watching her sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons play and coach football. Another one  of her past times was cheering for the Utah Jazz. One of Grandma’s greatest talents was in the kitchen. We all tried to emulate her special recipes but nothing ever tasted quite as good as Mellys. No one ever left her home hungry.

She is survived by her children: William Ken (Sharon), Richfield; Jack S. (Carol), St. George; and Beverlee (Roger) Beutler, St. George. Melly was blessed with 6 grandchildren:
Ryan (Trisha) Bishop,  Kaysville;  Jackie ( David) Almadova, Spanish Fork;  Brock Bishop, Farmington;  Sam (Kim ) Bishop, Monroe; Julie (Andy) Richardson, Gilbert, AZ; Joni( Brett) Rollins, Richfield; 20 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grands. Preceded in death by her parents: William Jupp and  Ava Stevens Starley; son: Richard Merrill; sisters: Rae Huff, Ruth Cahoon, Dorothy Russell and brother: Bill.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 11, at 1:00 pm, at the Nickle Mortuary Chapel. A viewing will be held 11:30-12:40, prior to services. Burial will be in the Delta City Cemetery.

Special thanks to the Retreat at Sunbrook and Dixie Hospice.
