Our loving husband, father, son and uncle, Michael “Shayne” Spackman, 45, of Spanish Fork, Utah passed away at home early on the morning of Sunday, April 28, 2019. Shayne had undergone surgery the previous Wednesday, April 24, hoping to receive relief from painful back injuries resulting from a June 2018 accident where the bicycle he was riding to work was struck by a car.
Shayne was born May 3, 1973, in Provo, Utah, the eldest child of Michael H Spackman and Deborah Brinkerhoff Spackman. He lived in Orem throughout his school years. He has four siblings and three children. He married Karla Yvonne Tanner August 4, 2016 in the Provo City Center LDS Temple. Loving and being loved by Karla brought him his greatest happiness in life.
Shayne fell in love with computers at an early age and made a career out of keeping them running for several different companies. Shortly after graduating from Orem’s Mountain View High School in 1991 he acquired a job as one of the youngest employees working for WordPerfect in Orem. Earnings from this job helped fund his mission to Sydney, Australia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous callings such as ward organist and in the Elders quorum presidency. At the time of his passing, he and Karla were serving together as youth Sunday School teachers where they shared a sweet mutual love with the members of their class.
Shayne had a beautiful bass voice. During his mission he had a lead role in the mission’s production of “Never a Better Hero” that was performed for members and investigators. He also played the piano and was most proud of besting his father’s rendition of “12th Street Rag”.
Shayne achieved and was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He would offer his help to anyone that needed a hand with whatever issue. He was not afraid of work, even having an early morning paper route as a young man. He was determined to be self-sufficient so as to provide for his family in good and bad economic times.
Shayne had a love of flying. He loved aircraft of all kinds. He assembled and flew model planes and helicopters, doing amazing stunts with them for the enjoyment of all in the vicinity. This love eventually led him to become a licensed pilot. As a child, Shayne loved Corvettes and cherished the times when he was able to own one. He enjoyed golfing with Karla and his uncles Larry and Terrell, bowling and putting together puzzles. He and Karla had reached the home stretch of assembling the 40,320 piece Disney Memorable Moments puzzle which they had hopes of displaying at a children’s hospital.
Shayne is survived by his wife: Karla; his children: Emily Michelle (Hyrum) Powell; James Michael (currently serving in the California Redlands Mission) and Tyler Shayne; his parents: Michael and Deborah Spackman of Sandy; his siblings: Trevor (Jennifer), Brady (Leela) and Ashley (Adam) Radel of Sandy and Randon (Ben) of Orem. He was preceded in death by all of his grandparents. Shayne loved his family dearly and had a special relationship with his 32 nieces and nephews who adored him.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the Spanish Fork East Meadows chapel, 1552 East 750 South, Spanish Fork, UT. Viewings at the chapel are scheduled for Sunday, May 5, 6:00-8:00 p.m.; and prior to the funeral on Monday, 9:30-10:40 a.m. Interment will be at East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, 4800 N 650 E in Provo.
The family thanks neighbors, friends and family from the USA to Australia that have reached out with love and support during this very difficult time.
