Gene Arnold Ekins

Gene Arnold Ekins, age 81, loving husband, father, grandfather and trusted friend passed from this life on Friday, June 14, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Born February 9, 1938, in Hinckley, Utah, to George Arnold Ekins and Sebrina Cropper Ekins. He married Gwenlyn Jane Mace on September 7, 1961 in the Manti Temple. Gene graduated from Delta High School, College of Southern Utah, and attended BYU and Utah State University where he studied Farm Management. He managed an orchard for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Elberta, Utah where he planted many apple and cherry trees. The family moved to Benson, Utah where he managed the church welfare farm. Later he moved his small family to Hinckley, Utah to raise his children, and where he worked for the Millard County Road Department and loved serving the people of Millard County.

Gene served faithfully in various church callings over the years. He served in two Bishoprics, Elder’s Quorum President, Priest and Teacher Advisor, taught Sunday School, and loved his years as a Primary teacher. He loved singing in the ward choir and was a faithful home teacher.  Gene served two missions, one as a young man to the West Central States, and then one with his wife to the Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission. He was an Eagle Scout and loved working with the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, was awarded the “Second Miler” award, and was known as “Papa Bear” while he completed Wood Badge training. He loved his service to the town of Hinckley where he served as a town council member and helped with many rodeos and 4th of July chicken dinners.

Gene is survived by his wife: Jane Mace Ekins; his children: William Ben (Amy) Ekins, Marianne (DeVon) Ekenstam, Bryan Mace (Patty) Ekins, Kenneth Gene Ekins, Nancy (Monte) Jones, John D (Christie) Ekins; as well as 15  grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and sisters: Kathryn Ekins Black and Margaret Ekins Wilde. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother: David C. Ekins.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 22, 11:00 am, at the Hinckley LDS Stake Center, 188 North Main Street. Viewings will be held on Friday, 6:30-8:00 pm, at the the Nickle Mortuary; and Saturday, 9:30-10:40 am, prior to the service. Burial will be at 2:00 pm at the Fillmore Cemetery.
