Karen Kaye Murray Fowles

Karen Kaye Murray Fowles, age 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2020 in Delta, Utah. She was born on September 16, 1940 to Karl Elmer and Eleanor Wilcox Murray. She grew up on the family farm in Abraham with her two sisters, Marilyn and  Joan. She graduated from Delta High School and soon after on August 7, 1958, married her high school sweetheart, Dirk Fowles, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They have been married 61 fun-filled years. This union brought 6 wonderful children: Kim, DeAnn, Russ, Deb, Rob and Angie. She had a wonderful life living and working their farm in Sutherland. Karen could make all the meals, do the laundry have the house cleaned and cut 40 acres of hay, all before 10:00 AM. She enjoyed laboring in love for 25 years working with her sister and daughter at the flower shop, where she continually brightened peoples lives by her special talent.

She loved her family, but cherished all 22 of their grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Her presence anywhere meant that there was a party soon to follow. Her home was known as “The Gathering Place” and it literally was. She planned parties for any holiday and several of our own holidays, including her precious “Pumpkin Pie Day”. She relished every moment she could spend in the mountains camping with family and breathing in the air at the Ponderosa.

She quilted by hand for countless hours, lovingly making quilts for weddings, babies, marshmallow auctions, Christmas gifts and any other occasion she could think up. Food was a priority in her home and there was always a menu in the making and getting food ready in the freezer for the gathering. Danish, Pumpkin Pie, Root Beer, Mini Ham Sandwiches, Rolls, Coffee Cake, Macaroni Salad, Frog Eye Salad and Cream Puffs. The list could go on and on, and none of these favorite foods could ever be replicated. She and Dirk have spent cherished miles and time traveling through Utah and Arizona to attend any sport, recital, performance, graduation or general accomplishment of any of their beloved children and grandchildren.  The kids always knew that their parents/grandparents were their biggest supporters in ANYTHING that they participated in.

She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities, including Relief Society President (twice), Sunday School, Young Women and Primary. She and Dirk served at the Manti Temple for 10 years as ordnance workers.

She is survived by husband: “Dirk” Darryll Jay Fowles; children: Kim (Don) Shreeve, Mesa AZ; DeAnn (Dave) Porter, Lehi UT; Russ (Holly) Fowles, Delta UT; Deb (Russ) Hillner, Delta UT; Rob (Dorie) Fowles, Delta UT; Angie (Wendell) Jessop, St. George UT; grandchildren: Kelly and Spencer, Ryan, Kristin, Taylor, Ashley and Skyler, Amanda, Hunter, Jaron and Cali, Lexie, Nick and Lauren, Kaden, Daycen, Allie, Skyler, Chase, Shaylee, Sydney, Ashlyn, Izzy, Aiden, Noah and Paige; and great grandchildren: Kylin, Trevor, Taryn and Parker;  her sisters: Marilyn (Jerry) Blanch, Joan (Dan) Simpson. She is preceded in death by her parents: Karl and Eleanor Murray;  brother-in-law: Bill Simpson.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, March 21, at 11:00 AM at the Nickle Mortuary. Video of the service celebrating her life can be watched at: https://youtu.be/50OXXdgtr0Q A Graveside Service followed at 12:30 pm, at the Sutherland Cemetery. A public viewing was held on Friday evening, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the Nickle Mortuary.

A hole has been left in our world, she will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
