Vernon Dale Bliss

Vernon Dale Bliss, age 87 passed away on October 6, 2020 in Delta, Utah. Dale was born March 30, 1933 in Hinckley, Utah to Oren Vernon and Alice Hardy Bliss. He was the fifth of seven children. He married Margaret Marlene Ekins in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 20, 1952.

Dale spent almost his entire life living in Hinckley. He graduated from Hinckley High School in 1951 where he played football, basketball and baseball. Basketball was his favorite sport to play. His favorite shot was down in the corner along the baseline. After high school basketball he played on many church and city league teams and loved every minute of his time on the floor. He was highly competitive and didn’t enjoy losing at any level, even a friendly game of horse.

Dale worked for several farmers when he was first married. He has a great work ethic and never shied away from hard work. After farming he went to work for the Millard County Road Department as a road grader operator. He spent most of his working career working for West Millard CO-OP where he worked as Assistant Manager and as Manager. He enjoyed his association with customers and friends and was never too busy to make a late night gas or oil delivery.

He enjoyed some of the simple things in life like the smell of sage and cedar, telling hunting stories around the camp fire, western songs by Jim Reeves or Marty Robbins, and the companionship of his hunting dog “Duke”. On each and every deer hunt he would put several cedar berries in his mouth and claimed by sucking on them would keep you from getting thirsty while hiking. Each October he loved to be in the mountains hunting with family. This was a yearly tradition and only ended a few short years ago due to his health. His love for the west desert may have been the only thing he enjoyed more than hunting. He seemed to know where almost every trail started and where it ended.  His love for the wild horses, blue skies, rocky terrain, and complete solitude were among his finest pleasures. He has taken pictures of almost every wild horse that has been on the desert in the last 25 years and has named many of his favorites. His love for horses and horse riding is something he enjoyed since his early youth.

Dale was no stranger to service. He is a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and has served in many positions including, Sunday School President, High Council, teacher in many capacities, as a service missionary at the Bishop’s storehouse helping with welfare needs, and as Bishop. He stated many times how much joy he received while serving as a Bishop and being able to help others. These were some of his happiest years in his life. He was in charge of the concessions for many years at the Hinckley Town Pioneer Day celebration. Later in life he and his wife were the town Marshall’s during the celebration.

Dale is survived by his four children: Barbara (Craig) Talbot, Spanish Fork; Karen (Cletus) Adams, Enterprise; Russell (Nikki) Bliss, Hinckley; Dan (Delna) Bliss, Hinckley; brother: Roger Bliss, Delta. He has 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife: Marlene; his parents, and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 14, at 11:00 am, in the Delta Utah West Stake Center located at 188 N. Main St. in Hinckley, Utah. Viewings will be on Tuesday evening, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Nickle Mortuary; and at Nickle Mortuary on Wednesday, 9:00-10:20 am, before traveling to the church for the Funeral Service. Masks and Social Distancing are encouraged. Interment will be in the Hinckley City Cemetery.
