Sherril Waun Tolbert

SherrilTolbert2.webSherril Waun Tolbert passed away at his home Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at age 82. Sherril was born February 22, 1938, in Delta, Utah, to Floyd and Margaret Cleone Wilcox Tolbert. He was the second of five children. He grew up in Abraham and developed an early love for the west desert, where he spent time with his dad, mining and farming. He graduated BYU with a degree in Animal Science in 1960. He married Joyce Winterton in the Mesa, Arizona Temple, on March 22, 1963, and the couple lived in Tempe, Arizona, where he managed feedlots and also worked at Arizona Cattle Supply as a salesman, specializing in animal health. This is where he built the couple’s first home and arena. He loved horses and the sport of rodeo and spent many hours training horses and helping many others pursue this passion. He was offered a professorship at the Mesa Community College over the Animal Science department, but had to decline when his father died and he was needed at home, in Abraham, Utah.

The young family moved back to Abraham after the death of his father, Floyd, to help run the family farms. This is where he raised his family and lived for 50 years. Sherril’s greatest joy was his 5 children: Tony (Melissa) Tolbert of Abraham, Utah; Tina (Mike) Gleason of Morgan, Utah; Troy (Tanisha) Tolbert of Plain City, Utah; Tyler (Sheri) Tolbert of Abraham, Utah; and Trevor (Veronica) Tolbert of Oak City, Utah. He shared his greatest passion, horses and rodeo with his family. He worked many hours in the practice arena, training horses and helping his children and grandchildren also develop a love of the sport. Sherril had a special talent for looking at a long haired, skinny colt and visualizing what it would become. Many people wanted Sherril to go with them to buy or look at horses, because of this talent.

Sherril should have been an inventor. Whether he was building something new or rebuilding something he thought needed improvement; he had a definite talent with woodworking, welding, and construction. He built his home, shops, sheds, and barns, and made most of the furniture in his home, as well. He built many things, such as spurs, bits, and worked with leather. He was handy with anything he put his mind to.

Besides farming, Sherril went to work in sales because of his love for people, and he worked many years as the manager at Steve Regan Company. He was able to meet many people, where he made many lifelong friends. After retiring, if he wasn’t attending kids’ or grandkids’ activities; his spare time was spent out on the west desert, where he shared his knowledge of the area with many. Sherril and Joyce also enjoyed three and a half wonderful years serving as temple workers in the Manti Temple, which were filled with wonderful experiences.

Sherril had a love for music. He enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. He was involved in several bands, which included a western band while attending BYU, and he sang for many occasions around Millard County. He was known for his beautiful, strong voice, which will be remembered and missed by many.

Sherril is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, of 57 years; his 5 children, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, and many others he claimed and loved as family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Cleone Tolbert; his twin siblings-brother: Paul and sister: Pauline; and brother: Lawrence. He is survived by his older brother: LaVoy Tolbert of Loa, Utah. No public funeral services will be held due to concerns around Covid-19. Service and graveside dedication will be held for the family on Tuesday, December 29. Burial will be in the Delta City Cemetery.
