Jay Homer Shurtz

Jay Homer Shurtz, age 94, of Sugarville, Utah, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 in Delta, due to age related issues. Jay was the fifth of the nine children born to Frelen and Stella Spencer Shurtz. He was born in Abraham, Utah on January 25, 1927. He moved to Sugarville, Utah at a young age where his father farmed and all the boys learned to farm. He served in the US Army from December 1948 to September 1953. He married Yvonne Robinson on April 15, 1950 in Fillmore. They were sealed in the Manti Temple in 1977.

Jay farmed all his life. He had a flair for designing and building farm machinery. He built a ditcher, machine hauler, metal press, flatbed trailer, and a backhoe out of an old International truck. He was thoughtful of his neighbors, using his backhoe many times to dig for friends and neighbors. He and Yvonne enjoyed camping, rock hounding, hunting and fishing trips with their children.  As they got older, they had many trips with Jay’s siblings. Family was a very important part of his life.

Jay worked out at the Topaz Mountain area for Anaconda Company for 15 years. He got his pilot license and a plane, then made a runway at his home and one out at the Anaconda camp so he could fly the 60 miles. Jay volunteered for Search and Rescue for many years and knew well the country out west. One year, his brother Cecil, who was in his 80's, didn’t return home on time from a 4 wheeling trip, so the posse came to get dad to help look for him. Sure enough they found him. Jay spent many years watching his grandson, David, desert race motorcycles. Jay would drive to town everyday and visit his friends, whether it was at stores or the gas stations. He loved people.

Jay spent the last two years at Millard Care Center. We want to thank the staff for the excellent care given to Jay.

Jay is survived by his wife of 70 years: Yvonne Robinson Shurtz, Delta; daughter: Gwen (Ron) Mosher of Leeds, Utah; son: Spencer Shurtz of Duchesne, Utah; brother: Elden (Ireta) Shurtz of Delta, Utah; sister: Coleene Jurgens of Highland, Utah; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Guy, Lane, Cecil, Kent, Keith, and Alden Shurtz; daughter: Linda Shurtz and grandson: Mike Mosher.

The Funeral Service attended by his family will be held on Friday, March 5, at 11:00 am, at the Nickle Mortuary. A Viewing will be held 10:00-10:40 am, prior to the service. Friends are invited to view the recorded video of the Funeral Service at: https://youtu.be/6X-Fsz7ZVYA. Burial with military rites will be in the Delta City Cemetery.
