Asher Ray Stephenson

On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, Asher Ray Stephenson, age 5, returned to his Heavenly Father. He was born on May 19, 2016 to loving parents, Brian and Candida (Haynie) Stephenson, and siblings: Cody, Caleb, Austin, Benedetta and Pemberley. Asher was our perfect caboose - a tenacious tiger sent to teach us greater love, patience and understanding. From the beginning we learned that Asher communicated in a unique way and it was our job to try and keep up. He would ask the same  questions over and over and over until you got down on his level, looked him in the eye and made a deeper connection with him so you could better understand each other. He was very schedule and detail oriented. He would always explain very specifically the way he wanted his sandwich cut - and then he’d explain it to you again just in case you didn’t get it the first time. If there were a lot of places to go or things to do in a day, as long as he knew the order of things, he was good to go along with the plan. Every night was “read me a book” and “sleep with me for ten minutes”. Making the right choice was very important to him, when reading his ‘What Should Danny Do?’ books he would always pick the right choices for Danny, he couldn’t do it any other way. When making his own choices he would often ask, “Is that right?”, and we would have to reassure him, “Yes Sweet Boy, that’s right.”

Asher was brilliant in a unique way. He was just starting to count to ten but would pull his fingers down into his palm as he counted instead of pointing them up like most people would - for some reason that made subtraction an easy skill to master. Instead of using words like “tomorrow” he would say “After we sleep then wake up again”. He was surprisingly fast at riddles - on a recent road trip I read out loud “What gets wet as it dries?”, he yelled “A towel!” before the rest of the family had time to think. Asher loved to tackle his big brothers and he was ferocious when he did. Nothing hurt or phased him then. He loved music and loved to dance. He loved dinosaurs and monster trucks and especially his Optimus Prime costume - he would wear it for days on end even when it was so hot outside he’d be sweating in it.

Asher was full of love. His brothers were his vehicles to adventure and his sisters were his second moms. He would tell each of his siblings that they were his best friend - but warned them not to tell the others so they wouldn’t be jealous. Whenever Mom or Dad would leave the house he would shout “I give all my hearts to you!” He was Daddy’s Tiger and Mommy’s Baby Boy. And he will always, always be with us.

Asher is survived by his parents: Brian and Candi Stephenson; siblings: Cody, Caleb, Austin, Benedetta, Pemberley; grandparents: Roger and Carol Stephenson, Loretta and Ray Fulk, and Thomas and Sue Haynie. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and so many special cousins whom he loved dearly. Asher was preceded in death by his aunt: Suzanne Stephenson; and cousin: Brendan Stephenson.
