Bryce Clair Pilling

Bryce Clair Pilling, age 82, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 while doing what he loved, looking for deer with his son, in the Vernon Mountains.

Bryce was born on March 17, 1940 to Clair and Cleo Wahlburger Pilling in the majestic foothills of Cardston, Alberta. Landing in the middle of two sisters, Reva and Kathy, he lived a surreal childhood ranching, farming, and exploring the surrounding mountains.

He married his eternal companion, Laura Lee, on June 24, 1959 in the Cardston, Alberta, Canada Temple. Together, they moved to Utah and started the life they had dreamed of with their two children, Don and Dixie.

Although a Chevy fanatic, he grabbed life by the horns. His summers consisted of family trips through the western states chasing rodeos where he participated in steer-wrestling and tie-down roping.

During fall time, he continued the dream operating his outfitting business, Dry Creek Hunts, on essentially every mountain range in Utah. His hounds, mules, and horses were well-known among the hunting community.

His love for hunting and wild places naturally led him into a life-long passion, conservation. Most of, if not all, wildlife species in the state can thank Bryce for their improved habitat and increased numbers.

If one was to look through his picture books, they would quickly realize how much he cherished spending time with his friends and family in the mountains. He meticulously documented adventures enjoyed with all of them. Sadly, yet heroically, he passed while preparing for a hunt he had drawn, and agreed to mentor to his great grandson.

Our Bryce is survived by his wife: Laura Lee Nielson Pilling; his son: Don (Heidi), his daughter: Dixie (Gene Henrie); 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. All who knew him will greatly miss his quick-witted sense of humor.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 28, at 2:00 pm, at the Nickle Mortuary, 190 S Center St. Friends and Family may gather from 1:00 to 2:00pm, prior to the service. Friends unable to attend are invited to view the recorded video of the Service.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife Organization.
