Mary Claire Hansen Brenay

Mary Claire Hansen Brenay, age 77, passed away on December 11, 2023 in Delta, Utah. She was born on November 7, 1946 the fourth of nine children born to Clare Fenwell and Rose Madora Peterson Hansen. She grew up in St. George. She took over a lot of responsibility from a young age in helping to take care of her many siblings. Mary was a skilled athlete, enjoying softball and playing for the St. George High School team.  Mary’s brother became involved in drag racing, and made a good friend at the garage where he would work on his car. He suggested that this friend meet his cute sister. Thus Mary met the love of her life. She married Ammon LeRoy Brenay on June 12, 1964 in the St. George LDS Temple.

They made their home in Las Vegas area, but after a few years, Ammon began working in the carpet installation business. Because of this, Mary’s family lived in Nevada, California, Oregon, Utah, Montana, and finally back to Utah. During this time, Mary supported Ammon and raised their two beloved children. She was a wonderful mother and completely devoted to her family. She was an excellent cook and provide food for many large family dinners. She made numerous quilts for all the children and grandchildren over the years. She always encouraged her family to be well educated. Since she had to leave her own education early, later in life she went back to earn her GED and eventually an Associates Degree. Mary will always be fondly remembered by her family because of her sweet, nurturing and compassionate spirit.

Mary was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She faithfully served in many callings. Her favorite times were spent either reading a novel, or spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her daughters: Cynthia (Dan) Riojas, Providence; and Annie (Ryan) Thomas, Hinckley; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren;brothers: Darrel, Larry, Robert, Charlie, and Danny Hansen; and sister: Irene Lister.
