Laurence Harold "Hal" Cooper

HalCooper2.webLaurence Harold “Hal”  Cooper, age 80, passed away the morning of December 21, 2024, as a result of  multiple strokes. He was born on November 5, 1944 in Provo, Utah to Laurence Clark and Inez Ruth Stevens Cooper. While growing up, he lived in Vernal, Salt Lake and Cedar City, Utah. To earn money, he delivered papers and worked at the Parkin Shop.

Hal was always an adventurer. As a young man, he helped his dad build their houses. He built and navigated kayaks with his father and brother. He was active in scouting both as a young man and with his sons. He loved the outdoors, enjoying camping, hiking, fishing, and river rafting. Later in life, he completed an Outward Bound wilderness survival course. He was also an avid reader and built many things. His children thought he could build or repair almost anything.

Hal was a man of high ideals. He served a two year ecclesiastical mission in Australia for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also served in the National Guard and Naval Reserve. Hal valued his right to vote as personal and sacred. He taught his children the personal and private nature of this privilege.

Hal attended college at Southern Utah University (SUU), and with a degree in chemistry and mathematics. While there, he also met  Nadine Kennington. Hal and Nadine were married on April 18, 1969 in the Manti LDS Temple. To complete his schooling, Hal attended a year of graduate school at Utah State University, and did an internship at Argon National Laboratories in Chicago.

Hal and Nadine returned to Utah and started his lifelong career as a Research Chemist in the mining and precious metals industry. His favorite job was being the head chemist for a gold and silver mine. His career would lead him to opportunities to work in Utah, Arizona and Idaho. Hal developed a process to extract unclaimed Silver from the mine's waste tailings, saving the mine millions of dollars. He was instrumental in developing a process to reclaim cyanide from the mine’s process water. Later working as a contractor for Kennecott Copper he developed a process to extract Alumina from the ground water.

Hal and Nadine loved to travel. Among his favorites was traveling the Silk Road through China and 5 adjacent countries, the Travels of Paul, and many others. For their 50th wedding anniversary the family took a memorable trip to Yosemite National Park.

Hal was a man of principle, integrity and character. As a devout follower of Jesus Christ, Hal embodied the principles and teachings of Christ in his daily life. He was active in his church. Over the years he accepted many opportunities to serve the congregations he patroned. He served with Nadine, as a volunteer for 8 years at the prison, and several years at an assisted living center. Hal loved the many years he spent serving as an LDS Temple worker.

Hal was foremost a husband and father. His decisions and priorities were rooted in the best interests of his family. He worked hard to overcome health challenges in order to continue spending more time on this earth with Nadine (who is the love of his life) and seeing his children and grandchildren. He continually provided a safe space for the women in his life: his daughters, granddaughters, and friends.

Hal is survived by his wife: Nadine K. Cooper; children: Geoffrey Harold Cooper (Aimee), Paula Thornock (Shane), Rebecca Hall (Randy), Aaron Clark Cooper (Cecily), Coray Kennington Cooper (Erica), Alea Schmuker (Caleb); 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 28, at 11:00 am, at Alta Canyon Ward, 2400 Alta Canyon Dr, Sandy. Viewings were held at the Alta Canyon LDS Church on Friday, 6:00-8:30 pm; and Saturday, 9:30-10:40 am, prior to service. Those unable to attend are invited to view the recorded video of the service. Burial in the Holladay Memorial Park Cemetery.
