Dora Day Bringhurst

March 7, 1922 — August 2, 2015

Our sweet mother and grandma, Dora Heloise Day Bringhurst, 93 years old, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, August 2, 2015 in her home in Delta, Utah. Dora was born March 7, 1922 in Byron, Big Horn County, Wyoming. She is the 7th of 14 children of Orville Cox Day and Otes Clysta Strasburg. She married the late Don Lamb Bringhurst on  August 16, 1941, and they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple on November 29, 1941.

Dora is survived by her three younger sisters: Jean Perkins (SLC); Esther Smith (Kaysville); and Miriam Greenland (Highland). Don and Dora had 7 children: Michael Bringhurst (Anadeane); Kathleen Robinson (James); JoAnn Johnson -deceased (Leon); Marilyn Christensen Oliver (Richard); Paula Johnson (Alan); Abel Bringhurst (Paula); and Richard Bringhurst -deceased. Dora’s descendants include 7 children, 32 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She always said the three things she was going to do in heaven were to organize “THE” choir, have lots of babies and grow a big garden. She had many callings in the LDS Church. She loved the scriptures very much. She continued to pursue her education in scriptural studies at BYU and Music Education. Her scripture books are legendary. She conducted choirs throughout her whole life, even with other callings from the age of 20 to 78. Fifty plus members were not unusual for her. Dora loved to write poetry and kept extensive journals all her life. She also loved to oil paint and was an excellent seamstress. She had a huge green thumb. People came from far and near to buy the enormous raspberries she grew. Some were even sold in the local stores.

When Marilyn was old enough to be involved in sports, Dora knew she needed a good coach and added coaching to her skills. The Highland girls’ softball, volleyball, and basketball teams for the next 10 years struck fear in the hearts of all the other teams as they took region championships year after year.

Dora loved the Delta 7th ward. The young men took such good care of her, bringing the sacrament each week and reporting what they heard. The young men also helped to paint her back fence which looks so beautiful. “You guys are AMAZING!” Brenan, Austin, Jared, Bucky, Jace and David. xoxoxo

Games and puzzles kept her mind sharp right up to the end. She enjoyed playing chess with Celeste Stephenson the last few months of her life. Celeste could even win at the end – sometimes. The whole Stephenson family have watched over her for years. She loved them.

The Peterson family have tended her yard and sprinklers and been there when needed for anything and everything. We love you guys! The neighbors have saved our lives more than once.

We want to thank all the Hospice people who have been in her home this past year. Never was a woman treated with such good care. Laura, Pam, Doug, Charlie and Kaylyn were her loving, tender caregivers. We cannot express all the love we feel for them.

She is so thankful she got to “SKIP ON OVER” before turning 94!

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 8, 11:00 am, at the Delta Stake Center 125 S. White Sage Ave. Viewings will be held on Friday evening, 7:00 - 8:00 pm, at the Nickle Mortuary, 190 S. Center, Delta; and Saturday, prior to the service, 9:30-10:40 am. Burial will be at the Highland Utah Cemetery at 3:30 pm.
