Leroy Glen "Gus" & Nancy Deane Black Fowles

August 4, 1941 — April 4, 2018

LeRoy Glen “Gus” and Nancy Deane Black Fowles passed away at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah after complications arising from an auto accident that occured on March 28. Gus passed away the evening of Wednesday, April 4, 2018 and Nancy passed away the next day.

Gus was born in Sutherland, Utah on August 4, 1941, the fifth of six children born to Vernon Henry and Grace Kenney Fowles. He grew up in Sutherland, helping out on the farm and playing sports with his brothers. He graduated from Delta High School where he played on the baseball team. He also excelled at church basketball. He attended Central Utah Vocational School, and graduated in 1961 with a degree as an Electronic Technician. While in high school he began a pursuit of a sweet girl, Nancy Deane Black.

Nancy was born on August 30, 1943 in Atlanta, Georgia, the oldest of five kids born to Dean L and Jacquelyn Helpingstine Flach Black. Her father served in the US Navy which caused her family to move many times. In the late 1940's they moved to Deseret, Utah. She graduated from Delta High School, and then attended Beauty School. She enjoyed the attention of Gus Fowles, but he had to chase her for a couple of years. She told him he needed to clean up his act if they were going to continue dating, so he did; and they fell deeply in love. They were married on June 8, 1963 in Deseret, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 9, 1963. They spent 54 wonderful years of marriage together.

They first made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1966, they moved their small family back home to Sutherland. Nancy raised the children and Gus went to work for the Autovon as an Electronic Technician. He later worked for IPSC until he retired. Gus enjoyed sports, BYU and the Utah Jazz. More than anything he loved playing with and supporting his kids and grandkids. He and Nancy were instrumental in starting the first area T-ball team. Gus and Nancy have been longtime supporters of the Delta Rabbits athletics programs. He loved camping and fishing and getting together for the yearly Fowles family reunions. Nancy was wonderful homemaker. She was an excellent cook, and loved sewing matching outfits for her kids. She worked for Dr. Oldroyd as a way to get braces for her kids. She enjoyed canning, doing latch-hook rugs, watching figure skating, genealogy, and bull-riding (watching of course). Her strength was being very organized, supportive, loving and generous. Gus and Nancy loved spending time together and with family, especially traveling the country, and bringing back their wonderful memories - like Nancy’s outstanding salt and pepper shaker collection. They will be deeply missed.

Gus and Nancy are survived by their children: Richard (Lisa) Fowles, Sandy Kinsman, Shelley (Rich) Hobson, Kristine Fowles; grandchildren: Cyndi (Robert) Lake, Trevor (Sarah) Kinsman, Devin (Lisa) Fowles, Dani (Kesler) Cook, Heather Fowles, Hollie Fowles, Olivia Hobson, Richie Hobson; great-granddaughters: Kensley and Baylee; Gus’s siblings: Robert (Lois) Fowles, Ken (Audrey) Fowles, Dirk (Karen) Fowles, Carol Ann Thayer; Nancy’s sisters: Frances (Doug) Meacham, Linda (Michael) Marantette. They were preceded in death by a son: Gary Fowles; Gus’s brother: David Fowles; Nancy’s sister and brother: Audrey Ogden and Larry Dean Black.
