Scott Lovell Sheriff, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 in Delta, Utah. He was born on February 10, 1931 in Oak City to Wilford and Bessie Lovell Sheriff. He grew up in the mountains of Oak City. He graduated from Delta High School in 1949. During his high school years he excelled in the basketball, football, and baseball programs and hit DHS’ first-ever recorded home run. After graduating he served an LDS mission in East Texas and Louisiana. Then was drafted into the US Army in 1952 and honorably served his country during the Korean War. After his discharge, he attended Mesa State where he played football and basketball, and then on to play football for Dixie College. He went to work at the Kennecott Copper Mine in Magna, and later at the Tooele Army Base; but he still had a desire to earn his college degree. He returned to BYU and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. He was a dedicated teacher and loved the experience of educating young minds. He first taught at Harris Elementary in Tooele, but soon was able to return to his childhood home and teach the 6th grade at Delta Elementary and Middle Schools. He retired in 1993 after 30 years of teaching.
Scott’s sister Margaret went to nursing school with a charming girl who she thought her brother might like to meet. Thus he was introduced to the love of his life, Bonnie Rae Christensen. They were married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple in August of 1963.
He had a deep love for his community and his neighbors. He served as Oak City Mayor for 4 years, and as a Councilman for 8 years; and Oak City honored him back by naming their park, Scott Sheriff Park.
He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a counselor in the Oak City bisopric. He served a couples mission in Dallas, Texas in 1994, and many years in the Manti Temple.
His greatest joy was his family. He raised two sons: Danny Evan and Marshall Lee. He loved encouraging and teaching his sons through sports. He spent many years coaching little league baseball, and traveled all over the state to wrestling tournaments to support and cheer on his boys. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing and camping. He loved reading Louis Lamour books, watching sports... especially the Cleveland Indians, Utah Jazz, BYU and the Delta Rabbits (unless the other team was coached by his son). He enjoyed doing genealogy, humming, visiting with his Oak City friends, and bragging about his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife: Bonnie, Oak City, Utah; sons: Danny (Laura) Sheriff, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Marshall (Sheila) Sheriff, Fillmore, Utah; grandchildren: Dylan, Hunter, Nicholas, Cameron, Shelby Bullock, and Slade; great-grandchildren: Bronxton Bullock and Eli Sheriff.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 18, at 10:00 am, at the Oak City Cemetery. A Viewing will be held at the Oak City LDS Church, 35 East Center St, on Friday evening, 6:00-8:00 pm. The online Video of the service is available at https://youtu.be/vr1ysg4kx8A .
