Mary Ellen "May" Black Kitchen

February 25, 1926 — December 2, 2012

Mary Ellen “May” Black Kitchen, age 86, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2012. She was born February 25, 1926 in Belfast, Northern Ireland to John and Agnes Black, the youngest of five children. She married Walter Kitchen of Newlyn, Cornwall England on September 26, 1946 and they had four children: Eileen (deceased), Walter, Gladys “Glitchen,” and David. In 1963 May and Wally joined the LDS Church in Belfast, and were later sealed in the London temple. They settled in Snowflake, Arizona in 1968, where they endeared themselves to all with their cheery “Hello, love!” Wally passed away in 1981. Their long-awaited reunion will be sweet. May loved working in retail and visiting with everyone in town. She especially loved serving the Young Women and teaching her “Primary boys.” May served as a stake missionary in Belfast, two GSU missions in England and Scotland, wrote to many missionaries and made friends wherever she went.

She leaves a legacy of faith and love to her children: Walter and Mary Kitchen (Dundalk, Ireland), Gladys “Glitchen” and Bill Shumway (Hinckley, Utah), and David and Pam Kitchen (Charlotte, NC), 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
