Lindsay Steele, age 86, passed away in his home in Delta, Utah on Friday, August 6, 2021. Lindsay was born in San Juan Capistrano, California on August 21, 1934 to Adrian Lavell Alldredge and Erma Steele. He had 14 siblings who have been an important part of his life. When Lindsay was 2, his family moved to Delta. He loved being outdoors. Throughout his childhood, he loved to camp and fish and hunt. He spent most of every summer living in Oak City canyon.
Lindsay graduated from Delta High School. He served an LDS mission, in the Southwest Indian Mission in Arizona among the Navajo and Hopi people. He felt fortunate to have been able to experience their culture. After returning, he was drafted by the US Army, proudly serving mainly in Germany in communications. After an honorable discharge, he found a job selling sporting goods in Salt Lake City. While there, he enjoyed attending many church dances. Because of his penchant for fun, he had lost his driver’s license. So his scheme was to always have the last dance with a girl who had a car, and would drive him home. Through this process he encountered the young woman who would become the love of his life. He married Lois Marchant on September 30, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple, and they spent 46 wonderful years together. After their marriage, he became a licensed barber and spent many years cutting hair in a shop and later from his home.
In the early 70's, they moved back to Delta. Lindsay worked as the custodian and property manager of the area LDS church buildings. Much of his free time he spent returning to the outdoors. He was an excellent hunter, who almost always downed the biggest game. His companions always marveled at his ability to hike up and down the mountains with a deer on his back. He served years as a scout master and taught others boys the wilderness skills he had learned.
Lindsay had a very funny and playful personality. His children fondly recall his antics as the ‘Diving Clown’. He could perform a front crawl that moved him backward, and inventive dives that were amazing and hilarious. On one occasion, he dove headfirst into a canal and got stuck up to his shoulders in the soft silt in the bottom. He did survive, but was from then on, to his family, forever known as “Stick” for ‘stick in the mud’.
Lindsay was very caring and took care of his parents and aunts as they got older. The activity that made him the happiest was spending time with his children and grandchildren, and loved to read and play games with them. He was an excellent gardener and was happy to share much of the produce he grew with friends and neighbors. He will be deeply missed.
Lindsay is survived by his children: Luke (Elizabeth) Steele, Taylorsville; Lance (Kimberley) Steele, Price; Leilani (Mark) Gray, Delta; Lee Steele, Mesa, Arizona; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; siblings: Dennis Alldredge, Parley Roundy, Novella Demkowich. He was preceded in death by his wife: Lois; son: Lex Steele; siblings: Leif Alldredge, Cona Jensen, Que Alldredge, Patricia Hickman, Dwight Alldredge, Cloy Alldredge, George Roundy.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 1:00 pm, at the Delta Stake Center Chapel, 125 South White Sage Avenue. Viewings will be held Friday, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the Nickle Mortuary; and Saturday, 11:30-12:40 pm, prior to the service.
