Garth Arthur Cahoon

December 23, 1924 — November 1, 2012

Garth Arthur Cahoon, was born in Vernal, Utah, on December 23, 1924 to George Weight and Angie Harmon Cahoon. He passed away November 1, 2012 in Provo, Utah at age 87, from a sudden illness.

Garth grew up in Delta, Utah and was well known for playing his trumpet in his high school dance band. He graduated in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy, serving as an electrician on board ship. After WWII he graduated from Utah State University. He married Elayne Bergsjo in 1948, and soon traveled to California where he received a PhD in Horticulture from UCLA as a Fullbright Scholar in1953. He contributed to citrus research at UC at Riverside. In 1963 he headed to Wooster, Ohio to work for the Ohio State University at the Research and Development Center. He was anxiously engaged in extensive research on apples and grapes and reestablished the Ohio Wine Industry in Ohio. He was inducted into the Viticulture Hall of Fame by the governor of Ohio. He traveled extensively to the countries of India, Belize, Africa, Germany, France, U.S. Virgin Islands, where he served as a consultant to improve agriculture in those countries.

Garth was an active member of the LDS church, serving in many leadership callings.  His hobbies included golfing, boating, and fishing on Lake Erie, singing in Barbershop groups, and of course, his love of Ohio State Football, though recently he has cheered for the BYU Cougars.

Garth resided in Wooster, Ohio for 45 years and then moved to Provo, Utah in November of 2008 when he married Betty Barney Rollins, a high school sweetheart.

Garth was a man that will be remember for his kindness, patience, humor, humility, and interest in many kinds of people and ideas.  He served faithfully as a righteous father, husband, brother, and friend to anyone who had the privilege of knowing him.  He has uplifted and enriched the lives of a great many people and will be sadly missed.

Garth is survived by his wife, Betty Rollins Cahoon; his four daughters: Jacquelyne Bonadio (Michael), Janice Pannell (James), Marilyn Cox and Nancy Stickel (David); his sister, Jane Cole (Wayne); 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, LaRue Nickle (Albert); and his wife, Elayne Bergsjo Cahoon.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 10, at 11:00 am, at the Edgemont 9th Ward LDS chapel on 4295 N. Canyon Rd. Provo, Utah. The visitation will be 9:30-10:40 am. The burial services will be held at the Delta, Utah Cemetery at 3:00 pm under the direction of Nickle Mortuary.
